Browse Safari more efficiently with Hinter extension.

Hinter is great little Safari extension that puts a number next to links for quick keyboard navigation. What’s really nice is that it doesn’t label every link on the page, just what’s visible to you on the screen.

Product description template.

To explain products and ideas with greater clarity, I often reference this framework.

Framework

  1. What is it?

  2. What does it do?

  3. How does it do it?

  4. Who would use it?

  5. Why would they use it?

Application

  1. It’s a series of questions or a framework,

  2. that allows you to craft descriptions of products or ideas,

  3. that once answered,

  4. people wishing to communicate effectively,

  5. will be able to present their ideas with greater clarity.

Thanks UVic.

How to pick olive oil.

What might otherwise be an overwhelming choice in the grocery store, when looking for olive oil to use uncooked in salads or to finish a dish consider:

  • First run-off / Cold pressed. This means the oil has been extracted from the olives without chemicals or steam.
  • Not ”Pomace”. This is made from the leftovers of the first run-off variety above.
  • Dark bottle or tin. Good olive oil must be stored in cool dark places.
  • Acidity below 1%. If it’s not marked, it’s probably higher.

For frying, use grape seed oil. Your good olive oil will loose its flavour and health benefits when heated.

Bonus: For balsamic vinegar, look for grape must, and either Tradizionale or vinegaras the main ingredients.

Thanks Rouxbe.

Wuffo as lead capture tool

Wuffo can be used as a quick and easy lead capture tool. With a bit of work you can pre-populate fields via a query string and make hidden form fields. Here’s how.

  1. Create a lead source field in your form.
  2. To hide the lead source field type “hide” in the ”Add CSS Layout Keywords” box.
  3. Look up the API ID for the lead source field: in the form manager click “Code” then “API Information”.
  4. Construct your URL as follows: http://USERNAME.wufoo.com/forms/FORM-NAME/def/fieldAPI-ID=VALUE

Now you can pass referral or campaign information into your forms without worrying about end-users mucking with the data.

A potential new customer saw a coupon code at our site and asked us for an additional discount on Highrise.

Initial draft of a response:

“I’m sorry, but we don’t offer any discounts or special pricing beyond what is published on our website. If you’d like to signup for a new paid account today, you’ll have the 30 day free trial, but we can’t offer any additional discounts on subsequent months. Sorry about this.”

Seemed negative so went back to the drawing board:

“We’d love to have you as a customer. I think you and the business will be very happy with Highrise. When you signup for a trial account, you automatically get 30 days free time before you’ll be charged. On top of that, if you use 37HRWEL as the coupon code, you’ll get 20% off the first month. That’s the best offer we have available right now.

I hope you guys will come on board. Have a great day.”

Says about the same thing without the sorrys and nos. 1st way: sorry, don’t, can’t, sorry. 2nd way: love, very happy, free time, on top, best offer, hope, great day. Tone makes all the difference in the world. Which way would you rather buy from?

When making a presentation, sometimes the photography you’re working with needs a tweak, especially photography found on Google Images. Such is the case with this series made just for fun.

If you can’t compete directly with the iPad, compete by attacking the minds of customers. I’m not sure how many people will actually wait for the MS Courier given that it’s just a concept, a concept that I would surprised (although ecstatic) to see MS actually deliver. In the meantime this is just inspiration for Apple and iPad developers; it looks like a dream.
